For all of us that harbor serious misgivings about drinking water out of plastic bottles, it’s time to make a switch.
There are many health and environmental reasons to stop drinking water out of plastic bottles. Many bottled waters contain toxins that are potentially carcinogenic. Some bottled waters stay still contain BPA, a known carcinogen. Others contain chemicals that have potential endocrine effects
Further, a great deal of fossil fuels are used to both produce and ship plastic water bottles around the globe.
Unfortunately, fewer than half of plastic bottles are collected for recycling and it is estimated that only 7% return it to new bottles. Sadly, most plastic bottles end up in landfills or in the ocean. Recycling efforts are simply not able to keep pace. There is a legitimate, growing environmental concern regarding the impact of plastic pollution in the oceans around the world.
Stainless steel water bottles are a much more environmentally friendly option and are much safer with regards to your health. They don’t contain the BPA that many plastic bottles contain and they need no liner like aluminum bottled waters.
For me, the mental checklist is “phone, wallet, keys.” From now on it’s going to be “phone, wallet, keys, and stainless steel water bottle.” We have to believe that every individual can make a difference.
