As a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician, I am amazed by the words I here that have been spoken to patients that I see. They are told things like ” I have never seen an x-ray that looks that bad”, or “You have the back of an 80 year old” or “You need to have back surgery or you may become paralyzed.” These statements are counterproductive and strike fear in patients. They foster a sense of dependence on the physician and increase pain and dysfunction.
Wd need to reassure people that low back pain is part of the human condition and it effects 90% of us. We are in charge of our minds and our bodies and we must not let back pain control us. We have to keep moving. “Motion is the lotion!”
